4. Types of Assessment 1.Summative Assessment: conducted for the purpose of assigning a grade. 2.Formative Assessment: conducted to help diagnose classroom learning problems and suggest ways to overcome them.

5. What is Authentic Assessment? “authentic” means that something is genuine, real, and true Requires that students engage in real-life problems, issues, or tasks for an audience that has consideration for what the students have learned. Students should be asked to demonstrate their control over the knowledge being taught by using the information that reveals their level of understanding. Addresses educational goals and groups of learning objectives. Places a greater emphasis on problem-solving, critical thinking, comprehension, reasoning, and self-reflection.

7. Portfolio Assessment A portfolio is a collection of work that demonstrates students’ efforts, progress, and achievements. Three Main Types: 1.Product Portfolios-contain products that are judged to be the students’ best work. 2.Process Portfolios-contain work that produce evidence of how the student work evolved and made corrections. 3.Progress Portfolios-compare the same work samples done over time to show improvement and growth.

8. Anecdotal Records/Reflections Assessment occurs when the teacher observes his or her students and takes notes on authentic experiences to determine literary development. Provides the teacher with evidence of child’s learning needs. Great tool to use to communicate learning to parents. Observations must be organized to be useful to the teacher.

9. Student-led Conferences A conference with parents led by the student. Teacher is the facilitator. Students lead the parents through a discussion of their work, typically using a portfolio they created. Places more responsibility on the student because the student must be prepared and reflective of his or her work.

10. Rubrics A scale that rates students’ performance at different levels. They do not look for the presence or absence of criteria. Identifies what is needed in order for a child to improve in a particular area. Can be given to students before the assignment is completed so students know expectations. 2 Types: 1. Holistic-gives a single score to an entire product. 2. Analytic-divides the product into parts and each part is addressed separately.

11. Multiple Intelligences Excellent way to differentiate instruction and give students authentic tasks.

Other Forms of Assessment Unstructured Oral Activities: games, debates, brainstorming, and story telling Unstructured Written Activities: logs, journals, and writing samples Cloze Test: measures reading comprehension by having students fill in the blanks of a text they have been studying. Peer Evaluation: students work together not competing for grades to reach a goal or task assigned by the teacher and then evaluate their work.
