2 Abraham Maslow  Born April 1, 1908  Published “A Theory of Motivation”  Considered the Father of Humanistic Psychology  Conceptualized Hierarchy of Needs

4 Maslow’s Theory  Based on the idea that all people are motivated to become self-actualized  In order to get to one point on the pyramid, one must first fulfill the level before it.  For example, the second level of the Hierarchy is safety. In order to achieve this level, a person must first achieve the first base level of meeting their biological needs.

5 Real World Application  Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs can be used as a therapy for a various array of patients  Often, depression and other negative mental states can be a result of skipping a stage on the Hierarchy pyramid

6 Criticisms  There has been little to no evidence serving as proof for Maslow’s theory  After extensive research, many psychologists have come to the conclusion that the Hierarchy of Needs is nothing but “a fool's daydream,” asserting that “there is no possible way to classify ever-changing needs as society changes.”

7 Carl Rogers  Born January 9, 1902  Considered to be founding father of Psychotherapy  Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize  Originated idea of self concept

8 Self Concept TThe mental representation of who we feel we truly are HHe explained that internal conflicts arise when we experience a discrepency between our self concept and how we act RRogers also believed that other people’s interpretations of our worth, distort our self concept

9 19 Propositions  List of 19 propositions that give an in depth analysis on self-concept  Relates to the Hierarchy of Needs in that organisms strive to achieve their full potential (proposition 6)

10 Real World Application  Roger’s theory of Self-Concept is used in psychotherapeutic treatments  As referenced in our movie, this therapy can be used to treat a variety of ailments including mental illnesses and disorders.
