The two ways are as follows: with a semicolon ; a OR with a comma, followed by a coordinating conjunction EXAMPLE: a Escobedo is home of the boxers; we have a boxer painted on our gym floor.

Compound Sentence A sentence created by combining two independent clauses and joining them in one of two ways. The two ways are as follows: with a semicolon ; OR b with a comma, followed by a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) FANBOYS EXAMPLE: b Escobedo is home of the boxers, so we have a boxer painted on our gym floor.

Choose one clause from each side to make a compound sentence: I walked to the store; I walked to the store, so The rain was pouring down, and All of the dogs were howling; All of the dogs were howling, so my ears hurt. my feet hurt I forgot my jacket! so I went to see what was wrong. I needed to buy some milk.

Independent Clause Before a compound sentence can be created, you must be certain that you are using two independent clauses. Independent clauses are able to stand on their own, and meet ALL of the criteria that a complete sentence does. Fragments, dependent clauses and phrases CANNOT be used when making a compound sentence.

Independent Clause Test your independent clause. Can it stand on its own? Does it meet ALL the criteria of a sentence, as below? A sentence, by definition, must contain all of the following: A complete thought A subject and a predicate

More Items to Remember There are only TWO ways to join the independent clauses, and you may not mix them up. Either use a semi-colon BY ITSELF (this shows a very close relationship between the independent clauses), or a comma with a FANBOYS. You may not use a semi-colon and a FANBOYS together.
