1 Passage into Puberty What’s happening inside me? –I’m suddenly growing taller –My voice keeps cracking – it’s SO embarrassing –I’m going to need to wear a bra soon –I’m getting hairy and hairier, and stinky too

2 HORMONES ARE HAPPENING! Hormones trigger the start of a new phase in your life called “puberty” Here’s what happens behind the scenes: –The pituitary and hypothalamus glands in the brain begin to send out new hormones into your body –In girls, the ovaries increase production of estrogen –In boys, the testicles increase production of testosterone

3 GLANDS WORK OVERTIME Sweat glands become more active and now produce an odor Oil glands become more active and acne may appear

4 Physical Changes Hormones help determine your body build: –Tall, short, thin, heavy… The hormone changes in your body cause these physical changes to occur: –Growth spurt –More perspiration –Body odor –Oily skin –Pimples (zits)

5 Physical Changes: girls Girls between the ages of 9 and 16 will notice: –Broader hips –A narrower waist –Hair under the arms, on legs, and in the pubic area –Breast growth –Menstrual periods and vaginal discharge

6 Physical Changes: boys Boys between the ages of 10 and 16 will notice: –Broader shoulders, muscle growth –Hair under the arms, on arms, legs, chest, face, and in the pubic area –Growth of the penis and testicles –Breast tenderness –A deeper voice

7 Emotional Changes The hormone changes in your body cause these emotional changes to occur in both boys and girls: –You become more moody and emotional –You become more self-conscious, sensitive, and concerned over your appearance and everything about yourself

8 Social Changes As a result of the physical and emotional changes in your body, both girls and boys may notice these social changes: –You make comparisons between yourself and your peers –You withdraw from your family, have more conflicts with them –You want to spend more time with your friends and care more about their opinions
