2 What Is It? Free service available to all Algoma University registered students in any discipline of study Staffed by a qualified writing instructor who helps students with individual writing consultations by appointment. Helps students improve the writing skills they need to be successful at the university level. Works closely with the Learning Centre to provide a range of academic support services

4 When Is It Open? 14-weeks during Fall and Winter semesters, and usually for a limited time during the Spring/Summer semester. Currently, the Lab is open for appointments only. If you want to come in, you will need to plan ahead!

6 What Does the Instructor Do? The Instructor works individually with students to help them develop the planning, organizing, writing, and revising skills needed for academic papers in any discipline. Reviewing work in progress, such as parts of essays, drafts of assignments, and components of a paper; Grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, and logic and coherency; Discussing revisions and suggestions for writing development; Showing students how to self-edit their writing by discussing editing and revising techniques; Documentation, citation, and research skills, including APA, ASA, MLA, Chicago, and other discipline styles of citation.

7 What Does the Instructor Not Do? The Instructor will not write your papers, proofread them, edit them, or guarantee a specific grade for you. Students are responsible for all changes, edits, and revisions to their submitted work.

8 Booking an Appointment Students are permitted to make two 30-minute appointments in advance. The Instructor will recommend follow-up appointments as needed. Go to booking.algomau.ca. Choose the Writing/Math Labs link and do the following:booking.algomau.ca

9 1. Select the date and time you want. 2.Enter student webmail ID and password. 3.Fill in the form: – First and last names – The course code (ex. ENGL 1101) – Algoma University webmail email address on the booking information page. *Please note: the Instructor will only contact students through webmail. 4.Click the “Save” button on the bottom of the booking information page so the appointment will be saved. 5.If you want to change or cancel your appointment: – Follow steps 1 and 2. When the booking information page opens, scroll to the bottom and select Edit or Cancel Entry.
