London is one of the world's most important business, financial and cultural centres and its influence in politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion and the arts contributes to its status as a major global city. It is the biggest city in Europe. It is also an old city, with a long and interesing history.
Buckingham Palace Buckingham Palace is the official London residence of the British monarch. Located in the City of Westminster, the palace is a setting for state occasions, royal entertaining and it is also a major tourist attraction.

Big Ben Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock at the north- eastern end of the Palace of Westminster in London. For British people, the New Year starts when they hear the sound of Big Ben in the streets of London or on their televisions or radios.

In 1066 the new king William I, built the White Tower in the city. The Tower of London was both a palace and a prison. Later kings and queens built more buildings round this tower.

The River Thames runs through the centre of London from west to east. Its name comes from an old word for river. The city is a great capital city thanks to this river.
