.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 1. I took Distance Learning because: ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Human development sounded interesting and the fact that it was held in the DL room made no difference to me. I enjoy the field of psychology and wanted to learn more about it. I enjoy art and history and when I attended Schuylerville I had the privilege of having Mr. Roberts as a teacher and I looked forward to having him again. I wanted to take AP Biology. The major I am going into includes Biology and I wanted more background knowledge on the subject. I am interested in music and felt that I needed to learn more about the theory of music. I needed the extra help with preparing for my SATs. I wanted to take the AP biology course in my school and this was the only way it was offered. Calculus isn't offered at Warrensburg. Section C

.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Students most frequently said they took Distance Learning because: They wanted that particular subject. The subject they wanted was only offered in DL. They needed that course. They were interested in the technology. They wanted AP or college credit. They were interested in meeting new students. They wanted to try something different.

.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 2. What did you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ We got to interact with kids from a different school and were able to express our opinions. It was a good way to meet people from other schools and learn about how they do things. I liked the amount of attention given to each student. It felt comfortable and had a positive learning atmosphere. it was something different and more interesting than regular class. I liked the technology, meeting people, and the teacher's style. It was good for a large group like ours. I liked that even though your teacher wasn’t there in the classroom but instead on TV, I still felt like I was in a normal classroom. Being able to take a class from another school that I wouldn’t have been able to take otherwise, from a great teacher, Mrs. Marquardt. Section C

.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Most frequently noted as being liked by DL students: Meeting and interacting with different students, teachers and schools. A new experience working with the advanced technology. An interesting and comfortable Learning environment. The opportunity to take a class not otherwise offered. The subject or course material. The teacher or teaching assistant.

.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 3. What didn’t you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Sometimes the DL teacher forgot we were here because there are only four of us to his 23 and the TVs were so far away he didn’t know what we look like. The teacher wasn't as concerned (with) and didn't pay as much attention to the distant class. She and her class constantly acted as if the class revolved solely upon them. I didn’t like the fact that it is sometimes hard to hear the people from the other site. I didn’t like the problems we sometimes had with the system. I didn’t like the fact that not all of the sites would be working at the same time, we had different bell schedules. I didn’t like the attitude of (the other school) and their disruptiveness. They were rude and they often messed around with the equipment when a host teacher was not around. I wasn't always able to get extra help from my teacher. Section C

.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Technical problems with audio or poor student/microphone/camera positioning. Disruptive students or lack of discipline. Student Comments Section C Most frequently noted as being disliked by DL students: Lack of extra help or lack of one-on-one with the teacher. Lack of interaction with or lack of attention from teacher or other students. Not dealing effectively with bell schedule or school calendar differences.

.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 4. What changes would you suggest for the Distance Learning classes? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I would suggest that you work on the background noise so it doesn’t bother the host school. Better sound and microphones for all the kids in order to hear them better. I would suggest getting the camera shots closer. I would like it if the teacher tried to make it to all the sites more often. It is more helpful when teachers have get-togethers outside of class to make you feel connected. I suggest the teacher understand that there are other classes besides hers that she has to pay attention to. The teachers should get the DL classes a little more involved and use less lecture style lessons. Get to know the remote students better Limit class to only interested students that will concentrate. I would make sure the schedules are more equivalent. Teachers should deal with the time issue better. We sat around for 10 to 20 minutes doing nothing. Section C

.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Most frequently suggested changes: Deal more effectively with bell schedule and school calendar differences. Visits by teachers to remote classes and or combined class field trips. Technical improvements and better student/microphone/camera positioning. More balanced attention to classes and better interaction. More discipline to deal with disruptive and disrespectful students.

.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 5. What surprised you about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I was surprised at how much it is like sitting in a regular classroom atmosphere. I was surprised that after a while it seemed like both schools were together in the same room, not really far away. I was able to learn just as much in the DL class as in a regular classroom. I become less shy as I went on and it was actually amusing. I liked the elmo. It surprised me when we could switch focus points, going from teacher to desk to class. I was surprised at the great technology that we have available to us to communicate with other schools. It surprised me that the other sites treated the teacher so rudely. Section C

.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Most frequently noted as surprising about distance learning: That it is unexpectedly easy to become comfortable with the system. Interaction with remote teachers and students was easy. The environment is comfortable and enjoyable. It worked so well. An appreciation for the advanced technology. A need for more discipline in some classes.

.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments I didn’t feel there were any limitations. Yes, the teacher did make effort(s) to compensate for limitations in the DL system. No, the teacher did not make an effort to compensate for limitations in the DL system. 6. Did you feel the teacher made an effort to compensate for any limitations in the DL system? Host SitesReceive Sites Section C

.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “No”) Please describe what you wish your teacher could have done. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I wish the teacher could have made the other schools feel as if they were actually a part of the class. I wish the teacher would have not confused me with the guy next to me. I wish she had acted like we were her class also. …come to our school like the other (DL) teachers did. …had acknowledged our school a little. …I wish he could be more prepared and organized better. She should have given the remote sites the same extra help she gave the host site. She could have taught better and something that relates to (the subject.) I wish we had a better teacher with better Distance Communication skills. Section C

.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Students that feel the teacher did not make an effort to compensate Section C Students most frequently wished that the teacher would: Not ignore their remote students or pay less attention to the receive sites. Offer some opportunity for extra help. (Only 1% of the total number of responding students felt the teacher did not make an effort to compensate for the limitations of the network.) Be better organized and prepared for teaching the class.

.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “Yes”) Please describe the efforts the teacher made to compensate. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Our teacher tried his best to realize that everyone was in different place. He tried to equally involve students at both the home site and the DL site. He always included the other students he also went to their schools several times to make them feel included. She came to our school a few times and she offered to meet with us if we had questions. He created a website so we could interact with him at anytime. There were a few minutes after the other school signed off and she spent that time reviewing with us. She gave us her email addresses so we could contact her with any questions. She offered to set up extra classes for help, arranged phone calls and emailed us students at her remote site. Section C

.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Most Frequently Recognized DL Teacher Efforts Students that feel the teacher did make an effort to compensate: Visited receive sites and promoted interaction between schools. Made e-mail and/or phone contact available. Provided extra help and review sessions. Made efforts to resolve technical issues. Used technology to its fullest.
