Jacksons family was very poor at thirteen years old he was captured by the British. They then contracted smallpox his mom was able to get them out but his brother died on on the trip home. 8. JACKSON AND A POLITICAL CONVENTION After Jackson was elected in 1828 party structures got better and the idea of conventions began to make more sense. There where party conventions on a state level but never a national convention. The rise of Andrew Jackson caused the idea of being elected by a caucus of congressmen to fall out of favor causing Americans to find better ways to elect presidents. As he was working his way up in life he became the seventh president after he lost in 1824 he came back to win in 1828. As president he was known as the “common man’’, because he became a rich Tennessee lawyer and a successful young politician. He died June 8 th 1845.
