1 Plant and Animal Cells (Text pages 10-13)
1.3 Plant and Animal Cells (Text pages 10-13)

2 Big Idea What are the similarities and differences between plant and animal cells What are the important parts of plant and animal cells

3

4 Plant Cells

5 Animal Cells

6 Cell Structures found in both plant and animal cells
Cell structures are called organelles

7 1. Nucleus: control centre (brain), controls all activities in the cell Eukaryotic cells: nucleus with a nuclear membrane (plant and animal) Prokaryotic cells: no nuclear membrane (bacteria, viruses)

8

9

10 2. chromosomes Inside of nucleus Contains genes (genetic information)
Genes are made of DNA Construction plans

11

12

13 3. Cell (or plasma) membrane
Surrounds cell Gate keeper (controls what goes in and out of cell) Made of a double layer of fat cells

14

15 4. Cytoplasm Watery fluid Holds organelles in place Transport

16 5. Vacuole Filled with fluid (water, nutrients, waste)
Storage for the cell Very large in plant cells (used for stability as well)

17 Structures only found in Animal cells
6. Some animal cells have flagellum (whip like tail) and cilia (hairs) Help cell move around

18

19 Structures only found in Plant Cells
7. Cell wall Protects and supports plant cell Gases, water and some minerals can pass through Cell wall

20 8. chloroplasts Food factories for the plant cell
Contain chlorophyll for photosynthesis

21 Video’s Bill Nye
