Cells

What are cells?  Cells are the basic units of all living things (plants, animals and humans)  Cells are not exactly the same in their shape and structure, but are very similar.  New cells are produced from existing cells.

What are cells parts and their functions?  Most cells have a nucleus that acts as the brain of the cell and controls all cell activities.  The cell membrane acts as a gate of the cell and controls movement of materials into and out of the cell.

Are plant and animal cells the same or different?  Both plant and animal cells have 7 cell parts: cell membrane, cytoplasm, mitochondria, vacuoles, nucleus, nuclear membrane and chromosomes.  In addition to the 7 parts, plant cells have 2 more parts: cell wall and chloroplasts.

Time to take some notes:  Cells are the basic building blocks of all living things.  A cell is the smallest part of a living thing that can carry out all of the processes of life.  Cells take in nutrients and also get rid of wastes.  Most cells can only be seen through a microscope.  Unicellular Organism  A unicellular organism is made up of only one cell.  Essential Vocabulary -  cell  unicellular organism
