2 Sentence Fragments A sentence fragment is an incomplete sentence. It is missing a subject, a predicate, or both. The missing part(s) must be added in order to fix, or complete, the sentence.

3 Example Original: My brother. (This is a fragment because it is missing a predicate.) Revised: My brother likes movies with a lot of action. (This is complete because it contains a subject & predicate.)

4 Modeling For the May Day festivities. The crowd gathered in the park for the May Day festivities. Always do. I’m sure I’ll win again because I always do.

6 Run-On Sentences A run-on sentence, sometimes called a run- on, is two or more sentences written as though they were a single sentence. To correct a run-on, you can –Insert an end mark and start a new sentence. –Insert a coordinating conjunction, such as and, but, or so, after a comma –Change a comma to a semicolon

7 Example (original) I thought Randy would win the class elections, Mary believed Ling would be the winner. (revised) I thought Randy would win the class elections, but Mary believed Ling would be the winner.

8 Modeling I thought I wouldn’t like being away from home, it’s actually really fun. I thought I wouldn’t like being away from home, but it’s actually really fun. I promised to behave, they threatened to send me home. I promised to behave when they threatened to send me home.

9 Guided Practice They didn’t count on the boy’s adventurous spirit they were surprised by it. Parents worry about keeping their children safe, they don’t worry about keeping people safe from their children.

10 Independent Practice Directions: On your paper correct each of the following to create a complete sentence. 1.I washed the dishes then I did the laundry. 2.She asked for a raise she got it.
