OJECTIVES: DEFINE SELF ESTEEM LIST THE BENEFITS OF HAVING HIGH SELF ESTEEM IDENTIFY FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE DEVELOPMENT OD SELF ESTEEM

2 WHAT IS SELF ESTEEM? SELF ESTEEM IS THE MEASUREMENT OF HOW YOU VALUE, RESPECT, AND FEEL CONFIDENT ABOUT YOURSELF.

3 BENEFITS OF HIGH SELF ESTEEM
INCREASED RESPECT: People with high self esteem respect themselves by taking care of themselves. They will not do things to harm them like smoke, do drugs, and drink alcohol. They do not put themselves down. They exercise, eat right, and get plenty of rest. They also, respect their values and beliefs. INCREASED ABILITY TO REACH GOALS: One is more likely to set realistic goals and stay with it until you reach those goals. They challenge themselves and accomplish more.

4 INCREASED WILLINGNESS TO TRY: They will try new things and not get discouraged easily.
INCREASED FEELINGS OF VALUE: They feel like they are a valuable part of their family, school, and community. They are more likely to ask for help, if they need it, and help others.

5 CHARACTERISTIC OF HIGH SELF ESTEEM
Speak up for themselves. Respects self and others. Has confidence. Tries new things Feels valuable to society. Adjusts to change and feels optimistic. Makes decisions based on values.

6 CHARACTERISTICS OF LOW SELF ESTEEM
Feels insecure. Disrepects self and others. Vulnerable to peer pressure. Depressed and does not feel valuable. Fears failure AND IS PESSIMISTIC. Uses drugs and alcohol. Behaves destructively.

7 SELF ESTEEM DEVELOPMENT
Self esteem begins to develop the day you are born and varies throughout your life. Self Concept: The measure of how you view yourself. Do you see yourself as valuable and likeable. Interpreting Messages from Others: How you interpret messages about yourself depends of how you view yourself. These messages shape about what you feel about yourself. Remember Self Esteem is how you feel about yourself, not how others feel about you or say about you.

8 TEN TIPS FOR BUILDING SELF ESTEEM
Volunteer… Make a list of your strengths. Speak positively about yourself. Take care of your physical health. Reward yourself when you do well. Try something new. Choose friends that support you and your positive choices. Set goals to improves weaknesses. Cheer yourself through hard times. Have fun…

9 WAY TO IMPROVE SELF ESTEEM
Use Positive Self Talk: Practice treating yourself well in all you say and do…that is positive self talk. Act with Integrity: That is simply behaving or doing what you know is right. Choose Supportive Friends: it is easy to treat yourself well when the people around you treat you well. Avoid critical and disrespectful people. Accept Yourself: You know you are nor perfect, accept yourself for who you are.
