6. 1. Faith ► “There is no god but Allah and Mohammad is his prophet” ► Same god worshipped by Jews and Christians. ► Mohammad is the last prophet in line with Abraham, Moses, and Jesus.  Not divine ► Heaven and hell “Allah”

12. The Rise of Islam A.D. 600-1300

13. BIG Idea ► While western Europe was fragmented during the medieval age, the rise of Islam unified the Arab world.

14. Muhammad (570-632) ► Born in Mekkah (Mecca) ► Prophet of Islam ► Left Mecca due to persecution by wealthy merchants.

15. ► Religious and political leader  Conquered Mecca by military force in 630 and converted its inhabitants.  Sought unity and equality of all in the Islamic community. ► Islamic leadership split after his death.  Caliph “successor”

16. Divisions within Islam ► Sunni  See the caliph as more of political leader.  90% of all Muslims ► Shiite  Stress spiritual leadership  See martyrdom as a sign of devotion  Iran, Iraq, & Lebanon

18. Spread of Islam ► Islamic forces conquered most of the Byzantine and all of the Persian empire.  Jihad: holy struggle to spread Islam. ► By 716, Muslims ruled North Africa and Spain.  French forces stopped the spread of Islam into western Europe.

19. Culture in the Islamic Empire ►T►T►T►Tolerated Jews and Christians. ►L►L►L►Location, at a trading crossroad, led to great wealth and understanding. ►P►P►P►Preserved and expanded upon ancient Greek, Persian, and Indian knowledge. AAAAlgebra, Arabic #s, the astrolabe, & Aristotle.

20. Breakup ► Islamic Empire dissolved between regional caliphs and Turkish and Mongol invasions.
