3 Overview ► Islam: “submission to the will of Allah (God)” ► Muslim: follower of Islam ► Mohammad: the prophet  Received divine messages from the angel Gabriel. ► Quran: holy book ► Mosque: place of worship and community.

5 The Five Pillars of Islam ► Essential duties of all Muslims

6 1. Faith ► “There is no god but Allah and Mohammad is his prophet” ► Same god worshipped by Jews and Christians. ► Mohammad is the last prophet in line with Abraham, Moses, and Jesus.  Not divine ► Heaven and hell “Allah”

7 2. Prayer ► Five times a day facing Mecca

8 3. Alms ► Giving charity to the poor and weak  All are equal under Islam

9 4. Fasting ► From sunrise to sunset during the month of Ramadan. “Ramadan”

13 BIG Idea ► While western Europe was fragmented during the medieval age, the rise of Islam unified the Arab world.

14 Muhammad (570-632) ► Born in Mekkah (Mecca) ► Prophet of Islam ► Left Mecca due to persecution by wealthy merchants.

15 ► Religious and political leader  Conquered Mecca by military force in 630 and converted its inhabitants.  Sought unity and equality of all in the Islamic community. ► Islamic leadership split after his death.  Caliph “successor”

16 Divisions within Islam ► Sunni  See the caliph as more of political leader.  90% of all Muslims ► Shiite  Stress spiritual leadership  See martyrdom as a sign of devotion  Iran, Iraq, & Lebanon

18 Spread of Islam ► Islamic forces conquered most of the Byzantine and all of the Persian empire.  Jihad: holy struggle to spread Islam. ► By 716, Muslims ruled North Africa and Spain.  French forces stopped the spread of Islam into western Europe.
