LIFE LESSON “The darkest day in a man’s career is that wherein he fancies there is some easier of getting a dollar than by squarely earning it.” -Horace Greeley 4

HELLO EVERYBODY! It’s that time! Please share something good that happened this week! 5

GOAL SETTING AND PLANNING In order to set realistic goals for yourself, you must have a clear understanding what is important to you; therefore you will set up an interview with someone in your chosen field. This someone MUST have a degree. 6

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT “The best careers advice to give to the young is to Find out what you like doing best and get someone to pay you for doing it” -Katherine Whitehorn 7

WHY? Why should we set goals? What makes goals “Useful?” -Based on your values and beliefs -Must be personal (you must set them) -What do you want to achieve? 8

RESULTS OF GOAL SETTING PEOPLE Stress? Better Communication? Self-confidence? Performance? Happier? More satisfied? 9

TIME RELATIONSHIP What kinds of goals do we set for various aspects of our lives? How does time play an important role in achieving goals? -Personal -Educational -Professional -Financial -Community service goals 10

GOALS IN TIME Short term goals (days, weeks, months) -Some examples? Long term goals (years) -Some examples Value of short term vs. long term goals? Talk about realistic goals 11

EVERY GOAL SHOULD BE S.M.A.R.T. Specific Measurable Action-oriented Realistic Timed 12

SPECIFIC GOALS What do you really want to accomplish? -Your goal needs to be specific enough to be able to determine what actions are required to achieve the desired result. 13

MEASURABLE GOALS How will you know you have reached your goal – what marker or milestone will identify success? -Remember that Performance goals will provide better control than Outcome goals. -So it is best to measure the steps along the route to your destination. 14

ACTION-ORIENTED GOALS What exactly will you do (what verbs can you use?!) to reach your goal? -You still need to take a –pro-active stance. -Some sources say “A: stands for “Aggressive,” or working with purpose and diligence towards your goal. 15

REALISTIC GOALS A goal must be achievable. Have you researched enough to know it’s possible? Do you know someone else who has accomplished this goal? Goal set too high may be discouraging, but setting the bar too low will not provide motivation 16

TIMED GOALS Each goal must have some sort of deadline. -Some flexibility may be necessary, but deadlines help keep us motivated and focused towards completing our goals. 17

CASE HISTORY - LARA Lara is a stay-at-home, married mother of two small children. The past few years have been financially difficult for the family, so Lara has decided to go back to school to get a good paying job and help support her family. She would like a career that allows her to stay at home with her children as much as possible. Her goals right now are to get in and out of college quickly and start earning money as soon as possible. Lara is into arts and crafts and has always been interested in starting her own business to sell them. Although she has no prior experience or knowledge about owning a business, she frequents craft shops and fairs and has some knowledge of what other people sell. She has decided to go back to school to become an entrepreneur. 23

THOUGHTS FOR DISCUSSION Did Lara identify both her long-term and her short term goals, and did she plan appropriate steps to achieve them? How would you help Lara craft a set of goals in terms of becoming an entrepreneur that fit with the S.M.A.R.T. approach? How should talking to a show owner or other entrepreneur help Lara formulate her own goals? 24
