Waste: From Our Community, To Yours

Our Problem: Waste Landfills in our community are over flowing, and trash is going on to the roads, into the soil, into the air, and into our rivers. And some of this ‘trash’, are things that can be easily recycled.

Getting Inside Your Head Every family has said: “Oh, It’s just a couple of cans or any other recyclable. If were only doing it, it won’t matter.” If you’ve said that, YOU ARE WRONG!!! Lets say every family did say that. Where would we get the cans from? Not out of thin air that’s for sure.

Our Landfill Here in Town Emily lives near a landfill that is on Rock Prairie Road. EVERYTIME she drives by that road, there are plastic bags all along the fence line. Even though they have 2 people go out twice a day to pick up any debris that blew away from the landfill, there is still a bunch of bags.

Where Can Scattered Trash Get Into? Our Roads: Trash that gets blown onto the roads could be dangerous. A plastic bag might get caught under a tire, causing the car spin. Also, it just looks bad. We don’t want travelers to thing we are a trashy city.

Where Can Trash Get Into Continued Our Soil: Trash can seep into our soil and kills some of our food sources. Just one or two cans thrown into the ground might not seem like a lot, but every piece of trash counts.

Where Can Trash Get Into Continued Our Air: Your probably thinking, ‘How is a landfill affecting our air?’ Well, for one, the landfill cannot put specific items into the ground so, they have to burn them. When those things are burned, they produce a gas that is harmful to our air.

Where Can Trash Get Into Continued Our River: I think everybody knows that there is a problem with trash being in our rivers. It’s a problem every where. It may not be just from landfills, but if we reduce the size of the landfill, we reduce the amount of trash in our rivers. Every river has a source and a mouth. So trash will eventually get into the oceans.

Interesting Fact the Rock Prairie Road Landfill currently accepts an estimated 1000 tons of solid waste per day.

Decomposition That plastic bottle you “forgot” to recycle, is now at the landfill. And it will stay there for 450 years or more. Same with that chicken noodle soup can. It will take 200 to 400 years to decompose..

Solution #1: Assembly Line We think at the landfill, every time trash comes in, it should go through and assembly line. And in that assembly line, hired workers would go through the trash to get out all the things that can be recycled. Now, we know that this is a job that no one will really want to do, but people who need jobs will do it.

Survey (And Solution #2) We have decided to create a survey. The survey will be asking people if they would be willing to leave their recyclables out, like they would with their garbage. Apparently, 26 out of 26 people said they would do it. We pointed out that the only thing we would be doing is picking up the recyclables. They must do the rest.

Solution #3: Get The Message Out! To make people aware of our problem, they need to know the situation. We could… Have road signs! T. V. c o m m e r c i a l s ! Radio commercials! Anything really to get the word out!

It is up to you It is not up to everybody to recycle, it is up to you. It is up to you to put that empty soda can in the recycle bin. It is up to you to sort your garbage from recyclables. It is all up to you.

R– Really, really need your help! E– Easy to do. C– Cool to save our planet! Y– You can easily make a change. C– Caring about our earth. L– Less wasting, more reusing! E– Everybody should do it!

Where We Got Info From In this power point, we got this information from the Brazos Valley Landfill on Rock Prairie Road, and BVSWMA.com (And our brains )
