PRIVATE ATAKENT DOGA HIGH SCHOOL COMENIUS PROJECT TURNING THE BLUE PLANET GREEN [2010-1-DE3-COM06-11037-5]

First of all, we would like to thank all of you for the perfect week we had together in İstanbul. It is so fantastic to be with you again here in Spain!

While we are searching about our subtopic “solid waste problem of İstanbul” we learned that the best solution to this problem is RECYCLING !!!

We planned a school trip to the one of the biggest Recycling and Composting Institutions in the world which is founded by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality

Firstly, we are informed generally about the area on institution’s model. In spite of the warnings for the bad smell we insisted on watching the procedures with naked eyes.

Istanbul produces about 14,000 tons of solid waste per day, but it is not possible to recycle all these wastes. This institution can only recycle some of it because it requires great work.

It is not very common in İstanbul to classify wastes at home according to their types. So after collecting these wastes from certain regions of the city they are being seperated manually by the workers to prepare them recycling.

Different kinds of wastes are collected at different storing areas such as; metals, plastics, etc…

We It was very difficult to breath fresh air in the room because of the terrible smell… We realized the importance of classifying our wastes at home to minimize the working loads of these people.

10 Nearly all solid wastes are being recycled in a different way. For example, plastic wastes are turned into granule and can be re-used as package except for food.

Plastic bottles are broken into pieces to re-use as fiber products (i.e pillows)

13 Papers are so important to recycle as they save our forests!

14 Metal cans are being recycled and we can use them again and again

15 Glass can be recycled millions of time

Organic wastes are used for composting which can be used as a fertilizer for plants. It is commonly used for local parks in İstanbul.

It is impossible to recycle all of the wastes that we produced. The rest of the wastes are being stored in regular storage areas.

Wastes are being stored in huge potholes and they are covered by soil and rocks.

The chimneys that you see are placed to release methane gas which is pressed between wastes. It is possible to turn it electrical energy.

One of the most dangerous wastes are medical wastes. They are burned at a very high degree to protect environment.

Then we learned how waste waters are cleaned before pouring into the rivers or seas. It can be used to clean roads.

We went and see all of these procedures and realized the importance of classifying our wastes at home. But we wanted our friends to see some examples and to learn more about recycling. That’s why we organized a seminar about recycling at our school and all students learnt how important thing it is.

We would like to show you some great examples that are created by using solid wastes.
