1 Remodelling Children and Young Peoples Services in New Parks LEICESTER CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLES STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP Brighter Futures for Children and Young People Targeted Youth Support / Leicester Integrated Services Trial

3 TYS Objectives The Pathfinders will help the DfES … Trial the remodelling methodology in a new context i.e. youth services Understand how to promote integration on the ground inform policy development develop and test an effective change management toolkit and case studies for use in service redesign across others areas of the country

4 METHODLOGY We have engaged with 300 people locally including: –Service leads –Team leads –Practitioners –Young people –Parents/carers This engagement has included interviews, questionnaires, workshops, specific analysis of SEN provision at New College …

5 Men drink and sware and follow you Because there is threatening gangs all around FINDINGS: an aggressive / violent environment Other issues cited on the questionnaires: Nutty kids Too many bullies People terrorising the elderly Bullying racism skiving Gangs Fighting My sister just told my mum she is pregnant Police Attacks Getting back into mainstream school Drinking Lighting on Western Park, dogs Smoking Gangs of youths, fights Fighting racism Robbery Litter - Run down No posh housing Source: Young Persons Questionnaires

6 SOME STATISTICS Teenage parents: –3.8% of 16-19 yr old females in City that are teenage parents (compared to 9.7% in New Parks). –New Parks is the second highest ward in Leicester for teenage parents (after Eyres Monsell). Exclusions: Academic year 2004/5 503 fixed exclusions, 11 permanent exclusions. Representing 2247 days lost. (New College) Attendance: 2004/5: 80.6% On average each student is missing a day a week.
