2 FOUNDATIONS OF GOOD MENTAL HEALTH: BUILT ON SAFETY, LOVE, TRUST, AND ENCOURAGEMENT Level 5: Self Actualization (Reaching one’s potential) Level 4: Esteem Needs (Achievement and recognition) Level 3: Social Needs (Belonging, acceptance from others, companionship, and love) Level 2: Safety and Security Needs (Safe environment, free of danger) Level 1: Physiological Needs (Food, shelter, clothes)

3 WHAT IS SELF-ESTEEM? It is the feelings we have for ourselves about our worth. Positive Self-esteem means you value yourself and feel confident about your abilities. Negative Self-Esteem might make someone feel insecure about their abilities. Self-Esteem is based on the following: Self-Ideal (idea of what we want to be) Self-Concept (the way we see our self) Self-Acceptance (being comfortable with our strengths and weaknesses)

4 WHAT IS SELF-ESTEEM MADE UP OF? All the experiences and interpersonal relationships you’ve had in your life. Family Authority Figures Peers Media School Success How have these had both positive and negative influences on our self-esteem?

5 HOW MUCH DO YOU VALUE YOURSELF? How much do you believe in your self? On a piece of paper write down the percentage of how much you believe in yourself. 100%? 75%? 50%? What are you achieving with that percentage? What would happen if you believed in yourself 25% more? Dreams and self belief are free. You can take all you want and walk away.

6 HOW IS YOUR SELF-CONCEPT BUILT AND DESTROYED? Built Positive Attitude Identify and deal with problems Praise and compliments Find a good role model Set and achieve goals Exercise Be realistic Destroyed Comparing yourself to others Putting yourself down Drug abuse Peer pressure

7 WHAT DOES GOOD SELF-ESTEEM LOOK LIKE? Taking responsibility for your actions Positive attitude Accept yourself for who YOU are Learn from successes and failures Healthy relationships Know your strengths and weaknesses Take reasonable risks Forgive yourself

8 WHAT IS FRIENDSHIP? Casual Friends/Acquaintance Less serious relationships because your don’t know them well Share a class, play on the same team Maintained with little effort Close Friends Deeply invested in the relationship with one another Lifelong friends Can survive minor and major changes Cliques Small group of friends with similar interest Made up of both boys and girls Pressure to conform to the groups requirements to fit in Crowds Large groups based on common activity or reputation Stereotypical groups such as jocks, geeks, emos, skaters, and preps Friendship is based on two people caring, trust, and sharing.

9 WHAT MAKES A GOOD FRIEND? Open communication Trust Respect Emotional and physical safety Loyalty Acceptance Feeling good about yourself Fun

10 WHAT IS BULLYING? It is the act of one seeking attention or power by hurting another through physical (shoving, punching, or using a weapon), psychological (threats, gossip or rumors), or emotional (ostracizing, excluding, or teasing) abuse.

11 WHAT TO DO IF YOU OR SOMEONE ELSE IS BEING BULLIED? If you are being bullied: Stay cool Never meet the bully alone Walk away Seek help from an adult Talk to your friends Stand up for yourself If you are the bystander: Don’t join in If you feel safe intervening, do so Speak up Don’t pass rumors or gossip Be kind Talk to a trusted adult

12 CYBERBULLING Electronic communications through email, instant messaging, text, social media, cell phones, websites, and more. Examples Sending mean, embarrassing or degrading messages Creating pages ridiculing others Posting or spreading vicious rumors Rate pages Taking private or provocative pictures and sending them to others (Sexting) Threatening violence against others
