Cardio-vascular Adaptations to Exercise

THE HEART Cardiac Hypertrophy – increases: size of heart efficiency, especially at rest thickness of myocardium left Ventricle filling in diastole phase Blood pumped/minute & force of contraction Stroke Volume – At rest & during exercise Max. Cardiac Output

THE HEART This results in: Decreased resting heart rate Bradycardia – below 60 bpm (Indurain 30bpm) However, no change in CO at rest due to decrease in HR

THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM Increased capillarisation Improved vasculature efficiency Vasoconstriction/dilation Improved blood shunting Decreased Blood Pressure at rest (unchanged during exercise)

THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM Increases in Blood Volume (plasma content) Decreased viscosity Increased Red blood cell volume & Haemoglobin Blood haematocrit (rbc/total vol.) decreases due to greater plasma increase

Few adaptations take place in the Cardiovascular system as a result of strength training. NOTE!! Adaptations occur as a result of aerobic training.
