You are part of the sports committee in your school and so it is your responsibility to organise this year’s swimming gala. There are many tasks that need to be done in the organisation of this and so you will need staff to help you. As the school are paying for staff to help out, your job is to find the minimum amount of staff needed to ensure that all of the tasks are completed in the shortest amount of time possible.

Here is a table showing the different activities that needed to be completed in the project, and how long each activity takes to do. ActivityDuration (in days) A - Recruit lifeguards2 B - Choose date of the competition1 C - Students must train for the competition5 D - Train the lifeguards6 E - Hire the swimming pool1 F - Get posters and tickets printed3 G - Sell the tickets4 H - Distribute the posters8

Here is the activity network for this project: A(2) B(1) C(5) D(6) E(1) F(3) G(4) H(8) 0 0 2 7 1 1 2 2 5 5 13 Earliest start time (EST) of project Latest Finish Time (LFT) of project Activity and Activity Length Note: The activity length is in days.

In order to find the minimum amount of staff required, here is a Gantt chart showing the length of each activity and the float of each activity. 012345678910111213 BEF H A C D G

1. Assume 1 member of staff does 1 task at a time. 2. If a member of staff starts a task, he/she completes the task. 3. When one member of staff completes the task, he/she is immediately ready to start the next task. 4. When allocating the next task to a member of staff, we choose the next available worker. 5. If there is a choice of tasks to be allocated, we choose the one with the lowest latest finishing time.

Your scheduling diagram should look like this: 012345678910111213 BEF H A D C G Staff 1: Staff 2: Staff 3: Hence, the minimum number of staff required to complete this project in the critical time is 3.

1. If you found that, during the project, recruiting the lifeguards took 2 days longer than expected, how could you alter your scheduling to accommodate for this, without affecting the total project time? 2. If members of staff are paid £40 per day for their work, what is the best scheduling rota that could be used, to ensure that every member of staff receives roughly the same amount of total wages at the end of the project, without altering the total project time?

1) What did you find easy in this lesson? 2) What did you find difficult in this lesson? 3) When do you think you would use the idea of scheduling again the in the future? 4) What are the benefits of being able to schedule information? (Think about general knowledge, as well as skills gained)
