1 4 th Grade Parents’ Night 2014-2015

2  Tickets to Good Behavior: Students will earn tickets for good behavior. They can also win whole class tickets. These tickets will be entered into a drawing at the end of the week for a prize. Then, all tickets for the month will be entered into a drawing for a free lunch at the end of the month. The more tickets your child earns the more chances to win!  Consequences: Students will be issued checkmarks for behavior infractions on a weekly basis. These checks will be recorded in a discipline notebook. The first infraction will be a warning. The second infraction will result in a silent lunch. The third infraction will result in loss of recess time and the parent will be contacted. A fourth infraction will result in after-school detention.  *Severe behavior infractions will be immediately referred to administration for discipline.

3  Game Day Behavior Party Students with less than five checks will be allowed to attend the game day behavior party. The discipline notebook will serve as proof to their positive contributions to the classroom and school community.

4  All students will be required to meet a point goal each nine weeks based on their reading level.  The students will be required to take the AR test on their book. These books should be recorded on their reading log. The reading log is graded weekly.  Students may only read below or above their level with teacher permission.

5  Fourth grade requires a planner. Order forms should have come home in your child’s take home folder last week. If you need a form, please email your classroom teacher.  Please check your child’s planner each day for assignments. It should come home everyday.

6 6 › Students will receive a letter grade in Social Studies. Their Social Studies grade will be a combination of tests and quizzes, many of them will be open book, class participation, and special projects. › We will be covering Alabama History. The lessons include:  Geography of Alabama  Alabama’s Natural Environment  Alabama’s Early People  European Exploration and Settlement  Statehood and Settlement  Alabama in Conflict – breaking away from the Union, the Civil War  Alabama Grows – railroads and changing in economy  Alabama Moves Ahead – rights and reforms, inventions  A Century of Change – equal rights  Conflict and Change – following WWII  Governing Alabama  Famous Alabamians › Special skills introduced include map and globe skills, using timelines, chart and graph skills, population density map, and thinking skills. › Alabama History

7  Wonders Reading consists of six units.  The students will have a test on each lesson as well as a unit test at the completion of each unit  The students will be graded as follows: › Teacher-made and weekly tests/quizzes = 50% › Other (may include fluency, comprehension, projects) = 30% › Unit/9 weeks test = 20%

8  The students will receive the spelling words for each unit at the beginning of the unit. They will also be emailed to you at the beginning of the unit as well as be found on your homeroom teacher’s website.  Grammar will be taught using Wonders. It is embedded in the lesson each week. The students will work on grammar as well as writing standards.

9  We will focus on four main units of study: › 1 st 9 weeks-Sound › 2 nd 9 weeks-Motion and Design › 3 rd 9 weeks-Electric Circuits › 4 th 9 weeks-Animal Studies  The students will receive a letter grade in science. The majority of their assignments will be completed in class. However, they will need to study for quizzes and tests.  Their science notebook will serve as their textbook.

10  Madison City uses Envision. This program teaches the College and Career Ready Standards.  Math will be graded as follows: › Application-20% › Journaling-20% › Timed Tests-20% › Tests/9 Week Tests-40%

11  Critical Areas for 4 th grade: › Multi-digit multiplication and division › Fractions › Classifying geometric figures › Measurement & data  Practice facts at home (Math Facts in a Flash)  Topic Tests approximately every two weeks  Weekly Timed Tests each Friday

12  Every week (unless it is a holiday), you will receive an email newsletter. The newsletter will inform you of all of the activities and information for the week including the spelling words. Each subject will be addressed in the newsletter. Please make sure you read this email each week. If you need a hard copy of the newsletter, please let your homeroom teacher know.

13  We will be going to Montgomery this year. The date is already set for May 14 th. We will visit the Capitol, The Archives & History Museum, the Civil Rights Museum, and Old Towne. We will have lunch aboard the Harriot II riverboat. The lunch is included in the cost of the trip.  Each teacher will send out an email closer to time asking all parents that would like to chaperone to submit their name. These names will be chosen at random. At this time, we do not know how many adults will be allowed to chaperone. We usually choose an initial group of chaperones, and as time grows closer, we open it up to other parents if seats are available.  You are not allowed to meet us in Montgomery because our groups are set. If you chaperone, you must ride the bus. For safety reasons, you will not be allowed to follow in your car.  We will also be visiting Huntsville Utilities on October 23 rd. This trip will include lunch. The cost is unknown at this time.
