2. Direct Object
Direct Object – is a noun, pronoun, or word group that tells who or what receives the action of the verb
Objects answer: WHO or WHAT after the verb.
Note: Only in sentences with ACTION VERBS
Note: Cross out all prepositional phrases

3. To find a Direct Object
Determine if the verb is action or linking. You must have an action verb.
Cross out all prepositional phrases
Subject + verb + who?/ what? =direct object

5. Indirect Object
Indirect Object – a noun, pronoun, or word group that sometimes appears in sentences containing direct objects
Note: Sentence must contain a D.O. to have an I.O.
An indirect object tells to whom or to what (or for whom or for what) the action of a transitive verb is done.

6. To find the Indirect Object
Determine if the verb is action or linking. You must have an action verb.
Cross out all prepositional phrases
subject + verb+ direct object + to (for) whom?/ to (for) what? = indirect object.

8. TIP: Be careful…do not confuse prepositional phrases with indirect objects!
Examples of Objects of Prep:
My teacher showed the book to the class.
I left some dessert for you.
Examples of Indirect Objects:
My teacher showed the class the book.
I left you some dessert.

9. Subject Complements
Subject Complement – a word or word group in the predicate that identifies or describes the subject
Types of Subject Complements:
1. Predicate Nominative
2. Predicate Adjectives
Note: follows linking verbs

10. Predicate Nominative
Predicate Nominative – a word or word group in the predicate that identifies the subject.
Note: a predicate nominative may be a noun, pronoun, or a word group that functions as a noun. A predicate nominative is connected to the subject by a linking verb.

12. How to find a Predicate Nominative
Determine if the verb is LINKING.
Cross out all prepositional phrases
Look to the back of (after) the linking verb, if the word or word group is a noun it is a predicate nominative.

13. EX: A dictionary is a tool. This piece of old flint could be
an arrowhead.

14. Predicate Adjective
Predicate Adjective – an adjective that is in the predicate and that describes the subject. You must have a linking verb.
Note: a predicate adjective is a describing word. A predicate adjective MUST BE connected to the subject by a linking verb.

15. How to find a predicate adjective
Determine if the verb is linking. You must have a LINKING VERB
Cross out all prepositional phrases
Look after (to the back of) the linking verb, if the word or word group is an adjective it is a predicate adjective.
