3 Subjects: The Break Down Simple Subject Book Definition: “The main word or word group that tells whom or what the sentence is about is called the simple subject.” Complete Subject Book Definition: “The complete subject consists of the simple subject and any words, phrases, or clauses that modify the simple subject.”

4 Predicates: The Break Down Simple Predicate Book Definition: “The simple predicate, or verb, is the main word or word group that tells something about the subject.” Complete Predicate Book Definition: “The complete predicate consists of a verb and all the words that describe the verb and complete its meaning.” Helping Verbs are absolutely plastered to the predicate. DO NOT FORGET ABOUT THEM!

5 Compliments: The Break Down Book Definition: “A complement is a word or word group that completes the meaning of a verb.”

6 What kind of compliment? Find the Verb Linking Verb replace w/ is, or in the state of being the subject is the compliment Action Verb Cross out prepositional phrases Linking Verb… What? Who? Noun Predicate Nominative Adjective Predicate Adjective Action Verb… What? Who? Direct Object Indirect Object Direct Object to/for whom what Between action verb and direct object Double check by placing the for/to I.O. at the end of the sentence. If it works then the word is the I.O.

7 Direct Object After the final performance of the play, Ms. Marrazzo congratulated the cast and crew. Is she the cast? NO!!!!

8 Indirect and Direct Objects Charlotte and I gave our Dalmatian puppy a bath. (You) Pass me the ball! Charlotte and I gave a bath TO our Dalmatian puppy.

9 Predicate Adjectives The bag with the bowling ball in it felt heavy.

10 Predicate Nominatives Our next-door neighbor is a teacher at the local high school and the coach of the football team. Can it be replaced w/ Is? DUH! What is our neighbor?
