1870’s – The US experiences an economic depression. 1870 – 15th amendment added (African American men allowed to vote) 1887- Kansas woman, Susanna Salter, becomes first woman mayor in the U.S. 1919 – 18th amendment added (prohibition of alcohol) 1920 – 19th amendment added (women allowed to vote in state/national elections)

4 The Gilded Age $$$ The late 1800’s brought on the rise of industrialization (big industries, like steel, railroads, and banking) in the U.S. With this new wealth came corruption (people cheating to get what they want). See example of Senator Pomeroy of KS. and the political cartoon on pg.162

5 Tough Times for Many Only 5% of American families controlled most of the entire nations wealth in the 1870’s. The majority of Americans were living below the poverty line (economic depression). This brought on reforms!! Reforms are changes!

Wrote “What’s the Matter with Kansas?” Was a Republican who felt Populists were “gibbering idiots” who made Kansas people look foolish to rest of the nation. He helped to weaken the Populist movement even though later he began to support many of their ideas.
