2 African Americans struggle BTW’s Urban League focused on helping poor African American workers moving to cities DuBois’ NAACP used courts to challenge laws that were unfair to African Americans Jim Crow laws required segregation by law Booker T. Washington created the Tuskegee Institute; said make $$ to earn respect Poll taxes were used to prevent African Americans from voting; require paying tax.

3 Women’s Movement Carry A. Nation was arrested for “hatchetations” Mainstream women’s suffrage group was NAWSA (started by Susan B Anthony) 19 th Amendment was women’s suffrage. Women’s Christian Temperance Union wanted to ban liquor which led to prohibition
