3 WHAT IS A COXSWAIN? It is pronounced “cox-in” or simply “cox” A coxswain does not row the boat, but they do everything else!  Steer the boat  Give commands to the rowers  On the water coach  Help run practice  Organize the boat before and after practice  Eyes and mouth of the boat on and off water  Motivate individual rowers  Anything else?

4 WHAT ARE A COXSWAIN’S RESPONSABILITES?  Knowing how to steer  Care of your boat, rigging, oars and cox box  Knowing your teammates and what motivates them  Knowing the correct terminology  Clear communication with rowers and coaches  Safe transportation of your boat  Knowing how to row (not a joke)  Knowing your course  Knowing proper water/racing etiquette

5 WHAT MAKES A GOOD COXSWAIN?  Great at multitasking!  Clear and concise communication with rowers and coaches  Confident signal calling  On time to all crew events  Keeps a journal  Passionate about their boat/team/role  Constantly seeking to become better and learn  Organized

6  Show up 5-10 minutes early  Grab your cox box (make sure its working) and any other gear you are bringing with you on the boat  Take a seat in the club house for announcements  Find your coach and ask them what boat you are in and what drills you are doing – write these down with any notes the coaches give you  Get your line up from the coach so you can start memorizing names – write it down  Before you go down to the water, gather your boat, let them know what boat they are in, what oars to grab and their seat number  Get the boat on the water in an expeditious manor – safe and fast  Mark sure your sound system in the boat is working  Help with shoes and oars  Clear the dock as soon as possible so the next boat can launch PRACTICE ROUTINE – FALL 2014

7  After practice, dock and help with shoes and oars  Get the boat out of the water as safe and fast as possible  Put your boat on the racks and ensure oars are properly put away  Practice is not over!  Help other teams dock and get out, get your boat to help too  No one should be standing around  After boats are secured, help pick up trash on your walk back to the club house  Help remind your boat of announcements before they leave and make sure you have all of your stuff  Ask your coach any questions about the drills you just did, what you can improve on, what went wrong and how o fix it PRACTICE ROUTINE cont – FALL 2014
