With men joining the military, women joined the workforce and powered the machines that fed the war effort.

Rationing People were limited in what they could buy and encouraged to plant “Victory Gardens” to grow their own produce. Children were encouraged to collect scrap metal and bring it to local collection points.

War Bonds In order to raise money for the war effort, the government began selling bonds.

Government Control of the Economy Factories switched from making cars, refrigerators, and other consumer goods to making tanks and planes.

U.S. Involvment Before Pearl Harbor July 1940 - Export Control Act – stopped all shipments/sales of oil to Japan December 1940 - "Arsenal of Democracy" speech - President Roosevelt pledged to provide weapons to UK in their fight against the Nazis March 1941 - Lend Lease Act - allowed President Roosevelt to sell or lend war materials to any country deemed "vital to US interests" August 1941 - Atlantic Charter - statement of unity between US and UK - signaled to world that US was on Allies' side Aim: What were the major turning points in World War II? 9 II. “The Big Three” In 1942, Stalin, Churchill, and Roosevelt met to hammer out war strategy By 1944, Germany was fighting two front war against the US and UK in the west and the Soviet Union in the east The US Navy had also recovered and was now scoring victories against Japan in the Pacific In Europe, Africa, and Asia, several important battles had turned the tide of the war Aim: What were the major turning points in World War II? 10 Stations 1.) Open up Rise of Extremism packet to page 22. 2.) Each group will receive a folder with the documents needed to answer one set of questions on page 22 and 23. 3.) Students will take the readings out of the folder, read them, and answer the questions. 4.) After 7 minutes, students will return the readings to the folder and pass the folder on to the next group. The process is repeated. 5.) WHY? To make sure you’re doing work in class. Since you cannot take the documents with you, you have to be on task and cannot waste time.
