3 What is Dehydration? Your body is made up of lots of water. Does anyone know how much of your body is made of water (50-65%)? Your body needs this water to stay healthy and work. When we lose too much water (more than 5%) we get sick and can’t function at our best. This is called dehydration.

4 Causes of Dehydration Fever Sweating Hot climate contaminated water
No access to water Vomiting Loss of appetite Not drinking enough water Children and older adults are more prone to dehydration. Some causes of dehydration include: sweating, vomiting when we get sick, not drinking enough water, diarrhea. When we drink water that is not clean and safe for us to drink it can cause diarrhea. Diarrhea can be serious when the child is losing too much water. So how do you know if you’re dehydrated? Acute diarrhea Upset stomach Food poisoning Cholera Diabetes Disease of the Kidneys

6 When you are dehydrated your body slowly starts to shut down
When you are dehydrated your body slowly starts to shut down. It affects your brain, your heart, your kidneys, and digestives system as well as your body temperature that is normally controlled by water. All of these major organs are affected when you don’t get enough water.

7 Prevention Preventing Dehydration
Drink plenty of fluids preferably water Eat food reach in fluids (fruits and vegetables) Refrain doing activities during extreme heat or the hottest part of the day Avoid eating undercooked or uncooked food Boiling water before drinking

10 Dosage: Children 0-2. ¼ to ½ cup after each loose stool. Max 2 cups/day Children 2-9. ½ to 1 cup after each loose stool. Max 4 ½ cups/ day 10+ yrs. Approximately 2 L/day
