2 Introduction The following instructions are for configuring your Windows 95/98/ME computer off-campus to connect to the dial up network at UMBC. The following instructions are for configuring your Windows 95/98/ME computer off-campus to connect to the dial up network at UMBC.

3 Preliminary Notes Before connecting to the UMBC dial up network you must have:  A modem  A phone cord connected from the modem to a phone jack  Dial-Up Networking installed on your computer  An active GL account

4 Step 1 Double-click the icon on your Windows Desktop This window should appear:

5 Step 2 – Opening the Dial-up Networking Window Double-click the Double-click the Icon. If you do not see this icon, you must install Dial-Up Networking before you can continue

6 Step 3 – Making a New Connection Double click This pop-up should appear:

7 Step 4 – Naming Your New Connection Type UMBC for name of the computer you are dialing and click the Configure button. This pop-up should appear:

8 Step 5 – Changing Dial-up Connection Settings  Click the “Options” tab  Check “Bring up terminal window before dialing”  Click “OK”  Click “Next” This pop-up should appear:

9 Step 6 – Entering Dial-up Phone Number Type in 301-322-6199 if you are dialing from an off- campus location in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area Type in 301-322-6199 if you are dialing from an off- campus location in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area Type in 410-719-1094 if you are dialing from an off- campus location in the Baltimore Metropolitan area Type in 410-719-1094 if you are dialing from an off- campus location in the Baltimore Metropolitan area Click “Next” and then “Finish” Click “Next” and then “Finish” This icon should be displayed in the Dial-up Networking window:

10 Step 7 – Changing Server Type Settings  Right-click the UMBC icon and select “ Properties ”.  Click the “ Server Types ” tab and verify that "Enable software compression" and "TCP/IP" are the only items checked.  Click “ OK ”.

11 Step 8 – Connecting to UMBC Double-click UMBC icon you have made Double-click UMBC icon you have made Enter your username and password for your GL account and click “Connect” Enter your username and password for your GL account and click “Connect” Once a connection is established, this pop-up will appear:

12 Step 9 – Logging in to UMBC Enter your user name and password and press enter. Enter your user name and password and press enter. Type 1 at the Selection prompt and press enter. Type 1 at the Selection prompt and press enter. Click Continue. Click Continue. Selection Prompt:

13 You Have Completed All Of The Procedures!!! You should now be connected to UMBC You should now be connected to UMBC

14 Troubleshooting – Case 1 ProblemCauseSolution Cannot find Dial- up Networking icon Dial-up Networking is not installed Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double- click Add/Remove Programs, and then click the Windows Setup tab. Double-click Communications, and then select the check box next to Dial-Up Networking.

15 Troubleshooting – Case 2 Error Message CauseSolution Dial-up Networking was unable to complete the connection Modem has not been installed correctly and is not functioning properly in Windows 95/98/ME. Right-click My Computer, click Properties, and then click the Device Manager tab. Click the plus sign next to Modem and verify that a modem is listed that is not marked with a yellow exclamation point or a red X.

16 Troubleshooting – Case 3 Error Message CauseSolution Dial-up Networking was unable to complete the connection Modem settings are incorrect Double-click My Computer, and then double-click Dial-Up Networking. Right-click your UMBC icon, and then click Properties. Click the Server Types tab and verify that all settings are correct. Click the TCP/IP Settings button and verify that all settings are correct.

17 Troubleshooting – Case 4 Error Message CauseSolution Dial-up Networking was unable to complete the connection There is no dial tone Make sure modem is connected to the phone line properly
