7 Irony In “The Lie” Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. uses irony when he writes: “It is inconceivable to them that Eli could not go there, so they had no curiosity as to how Eli had done on the examinations, were not puzzled when no report ever came.” It is ironic because Eli’s parents are confident about Eli’s acceptance, when in fact he has already failed the entrance exam. Irony is a contrast between what is expected and what actually happens.
