1 Back to School Night Mr. Burke- Room 24 Fourth Grade Cool Spring Elementary September 6, 2012

2 Classroom Expectations Arrive in class on time. Display Penguin Pride (at all times) Tardy slips are recorded daily. Students need to be prepared. – Planners (how we’ll use them, etc.) – Notes from home, Lunch $$$ – Thursday Folders (Friday or Monday) – Homework (if assigned) Back to School Night

3 Math - Multiplication fact mastery is important. - Problem Solving Skills -Computation - Problem Analysis VA Studies - Geography of Virginia - People & Places - Virginia’s History through the Civil Rights movement Science - Earth Science - Virginia’s Resources - Body Systems Language Arts - Reading Groups -Writing Process - Novel Study Back to School Night

4 Homework Guidelines 2-3 subjects a night Word Study to start in early October Turned in each morning (the “Bin”) Is not taken for a grade Review of material covered in class Homework notes are allowed… if there is some circumstance that prevents completion.

5 Back to School Night Penguin Planners Written in daily (during that block) Notes are encouraged if that is how you want to get information to me. Please sign them (so I know you saw it) If there is no work, “None” & the Reason for it will be written Example- “Test Day” “ Assembly”, etc.

7 Back to School Night Fourth Grade Curriculum First marking Period English Oral & communication skills in a variety of settings (4.1) - Class discussions, Small groups, etc. Make & listen to oral presentations and reports (4.2) - Ziploc Bag Me, Book reports, Other Projects Read nonfiction and fiction with fluency and accuracy (4.3) Read and demonstrate comprehension of fiction (4.4) - Blood on the River, and other Novel Study Read and demonstrate comprehension of nonfiction (4.5) - Biographies, and other literature. Write effective narratives, poems, and explanations (4.7) Edit writing for correct grammar, capitalization, spelling, sentence structure (4.8)

8 Back to School Night Fourth Grade Curriculum First marking Period History/Social Science Virginia geography (VS.2, VS.10) -5 regions of Virginia & VA’s Land - Virginia’s resources Indians (VS.2) -Tribes native to Virginia - Lives, language, impact on our history Early Exploration, Jamestown colony (VS.3)

9 Back to School Night Fourth Grade Curriculum First marking Period Math Place value in whole numbers (4.1) Addition & subtraction of whole #s (4.5 and 4.6) Equality (4.22) Estimation (4.7) Science Scientific investigation (4.1) “PHEOI” Virginia resources (4.8) Earth, Moon, Sun System (4.7)

10 Accelerated Reader (required program) – 20 points per quarter (goal for each student) – Getting books from CSP Library every week – Students should also read for 15-20 each night – D.E.A.R. time is given each day Math S.M.E. & Reading S.M.E. Homework – 1 -2 Subjects per night (No Fridays) Projects – 1 per month/season (at the most) Reading Buddies – (w/ Gr. 1- Mrs. Cox) Friday pm Back to School Night

11 “Light” Snack (optional) 10:30 each morning Thursdays Folders (School Memos, etc.) -All school papers will be sent home on Thursdays. -Please sign & return with any papers promptly. Volunteering -Some signed up at Open House -Once opportunities arise, I’ll be in touch. Back to School Night
