Science Continuation and development of skills taught during the first quarter. New Skills: 2.1 Scientific Investigation: Students will conduct investigations using the scientific method. 2.3 The student will investigate and understand basic properties of solids, liquids, and gases. Investigate and understand processes involved with changes in matter from one state to another (condensation, evaporation, melting, and freezing). 2.7 Investigate and understand that weather and seasonal changes affect plants, animals, and their surroundings. Key concepts include effects on growth and behavior of living things and the weathering and erosion of the land surfaces. Social Science 2.2 Native Americans and Jamestown: The student will compare the lives and contributions of American Indians, with emphasis on the Powhatan of the Eastern Woodlands, the Sioux of the Plains, and the Pueblo people of the Southwest. 2.4 Native Americans and Jamestown: The student will develop map skills by locating regions of the Powhatan, Sioux, and Pueblo on the U.S. map; compare the climate, land, and plant life of these regions; describe how people in these regions adapt to their environment. 3.3 Jamestown: The student will make cognitive connections between the Early Colony and the Powhatan Indians. 2.1 Ancient China and Egypt: The student will explain how the contributions of ancient China and Egypt have influenced the present world in terms of architecture, inventions, the calendar, and written language. 2.4 Ancient China and Egypt: The student will develop map skills by locating China and Egypt on world maps; locating the regions, comparing climate, land, and plant life of these regions; describe how people in these regions adapt to their environment. Reading/Oral Language/Writing 2.1 The student will demonstrate an understanding of oral language structure. 2.2 The student will continue to expand listening and speaking vocabularies. 2.3 The student will use oral communication skills. 2.4 The student will use phonetic strategies when reading and spelling. 2.5 The student will use meaning clues and language structure when reading. 2.6 The student will use language structure to expand vocabulary when reading. 2.7 The student will read fiction and nonfiction, using a variety of strategies independently. 2.8 The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of fiction and nonfiction. 2.9 The student will demonstrate comprehension of information in reference materials. 2.10 The student will maintain and improve manuscript handwriting. 2.11 The student will write stories, letters, and simple explanations. 2.12 The student will edit writing for correct grammar, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Math Continuation and development of skills taught during the first quarter. New Skills: 2.7 The student will estimate and find the sum of two whole numbers whose sum is 99 or less. 2.8 Computation and Estimation: Estimate and find the difference between two whole numbers, each of which is 99 or less. 2.25 Patterns, Functions, and Algebra: Identify create, and extend patterns using numbers, concrete objects, and pictures. 2.26 Patterns, Functions, and Algebra: Solve problems by completing numerical sentences involving basic addition/subtraction; create story problems using numerical sentences.
