Easter Easter is the holiday which has two distinctly different meanings to many people. For Christians Easter is the most religious or sacred holiday of the year. Easter season actually begins approximately forty days before Easter Sunday – this time is known as Lent (=půst).

There are four important days during HOLY WEEK - last week of Lent. This week recalls the events which led to Jesus Christ´s death and resurrection.

Palm Sunday is the first day of Holy week. Many church services remember and celebrate Jesus´ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. He was greeted by crowds of people. (It was very strange, in less than one week these same people condemned him to death.)

Maunday Thursday On this day hold many churches a special service. It was the day before Jesus´ crucifixion. The Last Super is remembered. On this day, all decorations are removed from altars in churches.

Good Friday This is the most solemn (=nejsmutnější) day of Holy Week. Most churches hold solemn services to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ by the leaders of Jerusalem. Many Christians eat little or no food on Good Friday.

Easter Sunday This is a cheerful day, a sharp contrast to Good Friday. Easter Sunday is a joyful celebration of Jesus´ resurrection from death. Services are full of happy, uplifting songs, and churches are decorated with Easter lilies.

Secular celebrations ( secular = světský) Most people participate in the secular side of Easter. Eggs, rabbits, and baby chickens are three symbols of new life and fertility as Spring approaches. In English speaking countries parents tell their children that Easter Bunny lays eggs in the grass, bushes and trees. Children´s task is to find as many eggs as possible.

The tradition of the Easter egg hunt can also be seen in some European countries. In the United States children have been invited to the White House lawn in Washington, D.C., for the huge Easter Egg Hunt.

A strange tradition can be seen in the northeast of England where hard-boiled eggs are rolled down a hill. The winner of the race is the egg that goes furthest without cracking. At the White House Easter Egg Roll, children roll eggs on the flat land with a spoon.
