6 What is perception checking?  Making sure what you believe is happening truly is happening.  Asking someone if your inferences are correct.  Trying to figure what was meant, and not assuming you understand a situation. Why is perception checking important?  Perception checking help avoid confusion and misunderstandings  Helps avoid anger and frustration  Allows people to share their feelings and frustrations in a positive way.  Helps end conflicts before they begin, and promotes self-efficacy. 7 Activity Continued 1.In partners, individuals, or small groups read the following situation and write a response to each using a perception checking model. 2.Your responses should have at least two parts. 1.Your perception of the situation 2.And a question asking if that perception is correct. 3.Once students have completed all of their perception checking responses thy will share them with the group and their fellow classmates will paraphrase their responses. 8 For example: Ever since the beginning of the school year, your family been bothering everyday. They are always asking you how your classes are going. But they are asking far too often and you are getting frustrated. You my write: W hy are you always asking me how my classes are going. When you are always asking me, it make me feel like you don’t believe I can handle the situation on my own. It makes me feel like you are hovering over my shoulder. Why are you always asking?
