2. Periods of Mandela’s life for my project The life story of Nelson Mandela stretches over 12 periods. For the EMS project we chose the following 2 periods: The prison years (on which this presentation is based) Mandela, a free man

3. How did the politics of the day impact the economy of South Africa? Sanctions were imposed by Europe, USA and other countries Foreign companies like banks and oil industries moved out of SA Financial loans no longer available to SA Trade and tourism wasn’t promoted in SA There were strikes Quality education was not provided to non-whites

4. Crucial policy decisions made by the government and impact of these policies Apartheid Non-whites were suppressed and political enemies were imprisoned. Group Areas Act Non-whites had to live in government designated areas. Land Act Non-whites had limited choice in owning land

5. Comparison between world economy and South African economy Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the market value of all officially recognised final goods and services produced within a country.

6. Impact of economic realities on every citizen Black men had to travel far, leaving woman behind alone to look after their children - this often made them poor. Medical help was often not available to black people in rural areas. The quality of education was of a very low standard for non- whites in comparison to whites. Senior positions were reserved mostly for white males which created financial inequality.
