7. 7 Human Rights’ Perception in Russia Controversies – freedom of expression vs. religious protection feelings Pussy Riot Trial - Surveys conducted by Levada Center shows that more than 50% of the society has negative feeling on the Pussy Riot.(Levada Center 2013). More than 80% supported the punishment for “punk prayer” in the form of prison, work or financial punishment.(Levada Center 2013) Reaction to Charlie Hebdo Events - President Vladimir Putin in the condolences to President of France Francois Hollande focused on the problem of terrorism. In his statement he “condemned the cynical crime and reiterated Russia’s readiness to continue active cooperation in combatting the threat of terrorism.”(Putin 2015)

8. 8 Annual Report of the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation 2014 (submitted by Ella Pamfilova on 5th May 2015) the Fund “Public opinion”(FOM), the Levada Center and the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics (PRUE) stated that “the society has an adequate knowledge the concept of "human rights" and its components, with man emphasis made on such elements as “rule of law and social security.” (Pamfilova 2015) Thus, in line with the report Russia’s citizens expect that the government would follow rule of law and guarantee social rights. Furthermore, it underlines that citizens tend to put priority to second-generation human rights over the First-generation human rights. (Pamfilova 2015)
