The Cave 1.Discuss how Jim ’ s childhood experience of visiting the cave influenced his decision to go to the cave. In doing so consider: How his remembered experience differed from the experience he provided How his understanding of his leadership role might have influenced him What advice do you think would help Jim avoid similar issues 2.Discuss how the motivations that cause Jim problems on this day are also a prime asset for him that colors his leadership ‘ style ’ The Other Trail 1.This situation would not have happened had the group stayed together. What personal motivations influenced the leaders when they decided to let the group spread out? 2.How might the leaders ’ motivations could have been met so as to enhance rather than compromise the group ’ s experience? Field Leader (Hiking)

The Leader This course is designed to help you run events that are of the highest quality and safety Field Leader (Hiking)

For your event to be of the highest quality, two things must happen: 1.The participants’ needs MUST come first during every stage of planning and delivery 2.You must be passionate about your leadership role, and passion comes from having your needs met too! Field Leader (Hiking)

Managing the ‘balance’ between your needs and the participants needs requires: 1. Understanding what motivates us 2. Recognizing those motivations that have no place on our event. These we must do in our own time. 3. Recognizing those motivations that are satisfied through the event. These we should ‘treasure’. 4. Recognizing those motivations that are in conflict, but must be met anyway. These we must ‘balance’. Field Leader (Hiking)

Managing this process requires effort - To understand ourselves - To understand how this works in our role as a leader And Time It is a journey, not a destination Field Leader (Hiking)

Self Assessment Exercise 1.From the list in the manual, pick a strong motivation you have 2.Write down how it can be a strength 3.Write down how it can be a weakness 4.Write down a strategy for managing it so it doesn’t get you into trouble Field Leader (Hiking)
