Rivers fieldwork Measuring channel features and water quality

Have your homework out in front of you... Why do people measure water quality and the physical characteristics of rivers? Exam question: Describe how data would be collected about the water quality in a river (4 marks) Exam question: Describe how data would be collected about the water quality in a river (4 marks)

Self assess your answer... Exam question: Describe how data would be collected about the water quality in a river (4 marks)

Measuring river channel features Read the Geography Review article and answer the following questions: 1.What is bankfull discharge? 2.Why is it important? Read the Geography Review article and answer the following questions: 1.What is bankfull discharge? 2.Why is it important?

How to measure river channel features On a whole page of your book, draw a river channel cross-section like the one below (doesn’t need to be 3-D) – leave enough space around it so that you can annotate it... Make sure you have a title. On a whole page of your book, draw a river channel cross-section like the one below (doesn’t need to be 3-D) – leave enough space around it so that you can annotate it... 6 Using table 1 on the Geography Review worksheet and your h/w, annotate your diagram, to explain IN DETAIL how you would measure: Velocity Discharge Hydraulic Radius Slope Wetted Perimeter Sediment size Sediment angularity How to measure river channel features

Virtual fieldwork We have been magically transported to this beautiful river in Bohol, Philippines, where you are going to do some virtual fieldwork....using tables, measuring equipment etc in my Geo classroom!

Each group will need... 2 tables 2 post it notes 1 tape measure 1 clinometer 2 ranging poles 2 random objects 1 blank piece of paper to record your river channel findings

Write the following in your book – you will need to record your findings: Cross sectional area Hydraulic Radius Slope Wetted Perimeter Sediment size Sediment angularity

1. Place the two tables next to each other so there is a gap between them – this will be your river channel outline. River channel 2. Place the 2 post-it notes on the edge of your table – this will mark the height of the river water in the river channel – they should be roughly equal on either side. 3. Place the 2 random objects on the river bed (floor between the 2 tables) – these will represent your sediment. 4. Using your notes to help you, carry out the measurements of your river channel.
