Table of Contents Title: Formation of Sedimentary Rocks, Sedimentary Features Page #: 38 Date: 11/29/2012

Objective Students will be able to describe 4 features of sedimentary rocks.

Word of the Day Feature: A distinctive quality or characteristic. Settle: To cause to sink.

Sedimentary Features Bedding: Horizontal layering. Results from sediments settling out of water or wind.  2 Kinds  Graded Bedding: Bedding in which small particles are on top and large particles are on bottom (a progression.)  Cross Bedding: Bedding in which layers of sediment are slanted.

Sedimentary Features Bedding in Sedimentary Rocks.

Sedimentary Features Graded- Bedding in Sedimentary Rocks.

Sedimentary Features Cross- Bedding in Sedimentary Rocks.

Sedimentary Features Ripple Marks: When sediment is moved into small ridges by wind or water.  Symmetrical Ripples: Produced by Oceans.  Asymmetrical Ripples: Produced by Rivers.

Sedimentary Features Sorting and Rounding: Sediments are initially jagged in shape, but become round as they are transported.  Hard minerals (quartz) have a better chance of becoming rounded. Evidence of Past Life: Sedimentary rocks may contain Fossils.
