2 What is PDP? Structured process Supports you in achieving your: –Career –Educational –Professional Personal goals The school will guide you through this process using a number of activities and supports.

3 Why engage in this process? Successful professionals set and achieve clear personal goals As a student you will learn to do this through PDP Helps you utilise QUB supports to best personal advantage Employers will be interested in your WHOLE development as a person

5 PDP Process Considering the evidence relating to your progress to date (Reflecting) Deciding on the next steps to take (Planning) Taking those steps (Doing) Monitoring and reviewing your progress as you go (Reviewing)

6 Reflecting NB a key nursing skill The first step in academic, personal and career development is working out where you are now. Reflecting helps you to make sense of your experiences, thoughts, knowledge and ideas, to realise what is effective and how things could be improved, and to identify what to do in the future. Within this phase of the PDP process, you should reflect on, or think about your current learning, performance and achievements.

7 Planning think about and record a plan to achieve your goal. A good starting point is to define your goal the SMART way to make sure you have the resources and time to complete it. This will help you plan the steps needed to achieve your goal.

8 Defining your SMART goal will help you decide what you are going to do and what the result will be. Specific (identify exactly what you are going to do and what the result will be) - e.g. to present to your group within 5 weeks Measurable (so you know when you have achieved it - what will be the outcome?) - e.g. you know you have created and presented when you actually make your presentation to your group Achievable (your objectives should be challenging and developmental, but also something you have resources/support to achieve) - e.g. you have the resources to create and present Relevant - making a presentation to your group should be relevant to your developmental goals Timed (set a timescale and deadline) - e.g. In 5 weeks

9 Doing The third step in development is achieving your goal. As you complete your action plan steps you should gather evidence to help you prove to other people (e.g. a potential employer) that you have developed a skill, or completed training, for example. There are various forms of evidence you could gather including certificates, feedback from others, and the materials you produce when accomplishing your goal (e.g. PowerPoint slides from your presentation).

10 Reviewing If you spend some time reviewing your goal after you have completed it, you should learn more about yourself, and be in a position to enhance your personal, academic and career development. Considering questions like: What strengths emerged and how can I use these in future?, can help you make the most out of your skills and abilities; and What areas for development emerged and how can I overcome these in future?, might help you identify future goals. Remember that this is a private document; you do not have to show it to anyone else, so be honest with yourself and you should benefit more from the experience. If you were unable to complete your goal, you can use this section to work out what went wrong, how you can overcome difficulties, and how to achieve your goal in the future.

This requires you to make regular and honest appraisals of your own progress to date and to plan your own studies and address most challenges, in terms of your understanding of topics, yourself.

14 Year 1 PDP Goals 3 Improve your performance in assessments; online exams, written assignments Throughout your course, you shall be expected to cope with a range of assessments. Like any other aspect of your course, you should view these as a learning experience and review your performance in each so that you can; a) Identify your strengths and replicate/build upon them in future. b) Identify areas for development so that you can eliminate them from future performances..10% Year 1 results will contribute to your degree classification

30 Organising yourself Consider your time management skills Attendance in class demonstrates professional commitment Create a folder in your ‘H’ drive for each of your modules to store your notes. Keep your references here using the proper referencing system. This will save you time in the long run and improve your marks
