Chapter 10

Rural Driving What is the difference between posted speeds and safe speeds? Posted are the maximum allowed under ideal conditions, while safe speeds depend on non- ideal conditions

Curves Collisions occur at curves because the speed on the approach is too great When should you slow down for a curve (advisory speed) ? Before entering the curve High speed on a curve will force car to outside

What does a warning sign for a curve have on it? A curved black arrow

What is a median? An area of ground separating traffic that moves in opposite directions Which lane should you drive in, whenever possible, on a multilane highway? Right lane - left lane is used for passing and turning left

What lane should you be in when turning right from a multilane road? Far right

Why should you reduce your speed when approaching the top of a hill? Your line of sight is restricted What is an "escape path"? The space you can relocate your vehicle to avoid a collision

Following Distance What is the minimal following distance in rural areas? 3 seconds What are some examples of when you should increase your following distance? Being tailgated/steep downhill slope/following a motorcycle/pulling a loaded trailer/driving on wet roads

Multiane Roads How are these different from expressways? They don't have exit & entrance ramps Should you ever cross over a solid yellow line or double yellow line? Only when making a left turn or to clear an obstacle blocking the lane

Passing Passing is not allowed within how many feet of the top of the hill? 700-1000 ft Passing is illegal within how many feet of an approaching intersection? 100 ft

What should you ask yourself before you attempt to pass? Is it worth it? Is it legal? Is it safe?

Do you know of any other "no passing" situations? Within 100 ft of a RR crossing On a two-lane bridge or underpass On curves where line of sight is restricted

What lane should most passing take place? Left Is it illegal to intentionally speed up while being passed Yes

What is a switchback? A series of sharp turns usually found on a mountain Does gravity affect a vehicle's speed? Yes, it speeds up the vehicle while going downhill and slows down the vehicle while going uphill
