Apology and Indulgence Excellent work by Sunand – RIBA ICE is moving quickly Significant contributions to the Sustainability Policy for Construction being launched 11 June 2008

Rather than Recap Umbrella – values and priorities we can take to our members Basics – but basics that for many are completely new

START THE DISCUSSION WHERE AL GORE’S LECTURE STOPPED

If you don’t like the Hollywood version Stern Report - seminal work WWF- one planet + many, many others

Climate Change is real! Urgent action on ‘CARBON’ is vital if we are to: -mitigate the current trend -prevent a tipping point being reached

Common Questions What about population growth? What about China? What about USA? What about existing housing stock? What about cars and fuel cells? What about being competitive? What about energy costs? What about heritage? What about adaptation vs. mitigation What about leaving our children a society that stands the vaguest chance of working?

Sustainability model by Prof. Pierce 4 types of capital was startlingly incisive When it was done!

Sophisticated economic model balancing the entire ranges of soft and hard assets TOO LATE

Climate change fundamentally changes the world’s priorities

Why Carbon? It is a good proxy for most issues It stops “worthy” debates and starts to force informed choices It is a direct issue to engage clients in It’s a thread to pull and pull hard, in arguably the most complex issue for the world today

Carbon - shorthand Not actually technically correct for some industries Built environment, carbon is a reasonable proxy for resources, energy, waste whole life and if the model is reasonably technically sound, social inclusion and biodiversity issues follow.

CARBON AS THE THREAD If we accept carbon as the key proxy, the way into the issue, what does it change? Is it a try harder scenario? Is it a radical change to the design process, the inclusion of a new determinant?

Atkins firmly believes it’s the latter and the amount we don’t know is staggering.

Carbon - UK Shadow carbon price £50/tonne Projects being evaluated now for carbon affordability! Future departments to have a carbon budget

Private sector work – new or where Government has a locus: Carbon rationing Carbon pricing Carbon trading Carbon standards Where Government does not have a locus?

Built Environment Buildings Utilities Transportation infrastructure Public space Energy supplies Both have embedded and whole life Calculation for what carbon VERY, VERY IMMATURE! Perfect for Banks!

Common Questions What about population growth? What about China? What about USA? What about existing housing stock? What about cars and fuel cells? What about being competitive? What about energy costs? What about heritage? What about adaptation vs. mitigation What about leaving our children a society that stands the vaguest chance of working?
