1 Copper Reduction and Recovery
Due Today: 1. Copper Reduction Pre-Lab Homework: 1. Copper Reduction Formal Lab Report 2. Redox Titration Pre-Lab Copper Reduction and Recovery

2 Objective Recover a copper sample via reduction reaction
Determine the efficacy of the experiment

3 Key Terms Oxidation-Reduction (Redox) Reaction:
Follow the transfer of electrons Matched reaction – you cannot have one without the other

4 Procedure Notes Part I: Preparation of Copper Solution
Calculate the amount of CuSO4˙5H2O needed DO NOT forget to include the 5 water molecules Check your calculation before you make your solution

5 Procedure notes USE A VOLUMETRIC FLASK TO MAKE YOUR SOLUTION!!!
Use a 400 mL beaker to heat and stir your solution Work in the hood

6 Procedure Notes Part II: Reduction of Copper
Calculate the amount of zinc needed to react with the copper (II) sulfate Check your zinc calculation before you proceed The solution should be colorless at the end of 30 minutes May take less than 30 minutes

7 Procedure Notes Part III: Separation of Copper Vacuum filtration
Weigh the filter paper Place sample in the over to dry (optional)

8 Procedure notes Determine the mass of your copper
Tare a watch glass (zero the balance) Use a micro spatula to put your copper sample and filter paper onto the watch glass

9 Waste Recovered copper – solid waste container
Filter Paper – Trash can Filtrate – Copper recovery filtrate container

10 Risk assessment Hydrochloric Acid Danger Inhalation Hazard Corrosive

11 Risk assessment Ethanol Acetone Danger Flammable Respiratory Irritant
Skin Irritant
