1 3 rd grade Reading, Writing and Social Studies Curriculum

2   Independent Readers / Self-Selected Texts / Genre: students will learn a variety of genres such as: traditional literature, information, realistic fiction, mystery, poetry, and historical fiction.  Mini-Lessons over Comprehension Strategies: comprehension is key to being a successful reader in 3 rd grade. Our mini lesson will target specific comprehension strategies for students to continuously use throughout the year.  Reading Routines: Literature Groups, Book Clubs, Guided Reading, Indep. Reading, Word/Vocab Work: These are all building blocks to increase comprehension and fluency for your child.  READING HOMEWORK: Our primary focus for reading at home is to build endurance for reading over a period of time. We want your child to be able to concentrate on a text for a period of time. This will look different for each child and that’s ok. Reading Workshop

3   Bluebonnet Books (5 by January) *optional: these books can be checked out in our Beck library. Ask Mrs. Martin and she can direct you to our bluebonnet section. Bluebonnet books are books that are chosen by the state of Texas. The are books that receive an honor for their roll in educating children through literature.  Speeding To Read (25 Stickers) please see the guidelines on our Beck website.  Reading Assessments /Individual Goals– Reading level & Comprehension throughout the year.  DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) given three times a year September, January, and end of April. DRA determines your child's reading level, fluency, and comprehension.  Individual Goals: Your child will be creating goals for themselves to improve in the areas of reading and writing. 4   Writing Process: students will learn idea generation, the difference between revising and editing, and how to create effective leads and endings.  Narrative and Informational Texts: students will write personal narratives and informational texts with a purpose in mind.  Journals, Responses to reading, and Prompts  Writing Benchmark: students will write to a prompt and be scored on our Analytic rubric. This rubric is to determine their stage of writing and what goals and strategies they need to work on for improvement. Writing Workshop

5   Rubric Assessments: student writing pieces will be scored on our analytic rubric and sent home.  Writing Portfolio – Cumulative Progress over the Year Writing Workshop

6   Grammar, correcting sentences for meaning.  Spelling patterns/Word work/High-Frequency words  Word Morphology: Synonyms, Antonyms, Homophones, Multiple-Meaning Words  Spelling lists- in their planner weekly and on our website Skills Block

7   Integrated into the Language Arts Curriculum (biographies, contributors to society, scientists, inventors, national/local heroes, etc.)  Communities  Map Skills *taught during the 1 st 6 weeks *  Globe  Research project at the end of the year. Social Studies

8   May- Math STAAR – Timed, 4 hours  May– Reading STAAR – Timed, 4 hours  STAAR is about stamina, endurance, focus on the text and problem solving.  Our main focus is to build stamina in reading as of now. We want your children to be able to sustain reading as long as they can. Each stamina will look different for your child. STAAR
