5 Contributions Texas made to the Confederacy: Military - 60,000 soldiers and important generals: Albert Sidney Johnston was the 2nd highest ranking Confederate general until his death in 1862; Hood’s Brigade and Terry’s Texas Rangers (a cavalry unit) fought with Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. Over 20,000 Texas soldiers were killed or died as a result of this conflict. 8 Texas in the Civil War In 1861, Union forces blockaded Galveston. The next year, Union forces took over the port. In 1863, Confederate troops defeated Union forces and took Galveston “back.”

9 Texas in the Civil War In 1863, Confederate forces under Lt. Dick Dowling (from Houston) won a major Confederate victory at the Battle of Sabine Pass.

10 Texas in the Civil War In fighting on the coast and in South Texas, Union forces tried but failed to stop Texas from sending cotton and supplies through Mexico to other countries and the rest of the Confederacy.

11 Texas in the Civil War Texas Confederates won the “last” battle of the Civil War on May 12, 1865 at Palmito Ranch. The confederate troops in Texas hadn’t heard the war was over.
