2 MDM Programme was introduced in the year 1995 and revised in September, 2004 to provide cooked noon meal to Primary Students. It was decided by the GoI to extend the programme to Upper Primary School students from October, 2007. Introduction:

3 MDM - Objectives: 1.To maintain nutritional status among all the school going children. 2.To prevent drop-outs. 3.Increase enrolment, retention and attendance. 4.It helps universalization of education & Right to Education.

15 Special intervention/ initiative to improve the quality of implementation of the programme  Association of WSHGs with MDM as Program Implementing Agency (PIA).  Total Nos. of schools : 66383  Schools handed over to WSHGs : 39878  Each WSHG to make security deposit equivalent to cost of one month’s ration of the concerned School. WSHGs are assigned the duty of supervision, proper storage of foodstuff, preparation and distribution of food & cleanliness. WSHGs are assigned the duty of supervision, proper storage of foodstuff, preparation and distribution of food & cleanliness.  To check anaemia of adolescent girls the convergence are made with NRHM.

16 Supervision & Monitoring Citizen Charter – The following information has been displayed in schools under MDM.  Quantity of food grains received, date of receipt.  Quantity of food grains utilized.  Other ingredients purchased; utilized  Number of children given Mid-day-Meal  Daily menu.  Members of Mothers Committee  Name of SHG implementing the MDM Programme with name of the President and Secretary of the SHG.

17 Supervision & Monitoring Inspection of MDM at field level:  ADM, PDDRDA, Sub-Collector & Senior Officers of School & Mass Education Deptt., Health & Family Welfare, H&UD Deptt. are monitoring/ inspecting the Programme. At least 2% of the institutions by the district level officers, 5% by the Sub-divisional level officers & 10% by Block level officers. Internal assessment by the DIETs:  A sum of Rs. 16.52 lakh has been placed with the Director SCERT (Orissa), for the aforesaid purpose in the year 2005-06. The final report is awaited.

19 Involvement of NGOs under MDM  Akshaya Patra Foundation are supplying hot cooked meal in covering 50000 students in Puri & Nayagarh Dists.  Nandi Foundation is supplying hot cooked meal in 652 schools covering 104000 students in Ganjam Dist.

21 Issues  Allocation of adequate quantity of foodgrains.  Need for revision of cost norm.  Provision for smokeless fuel to all schools (LPG Gas & Chulla).
