The Heart By Ruth Barclay

How the heart works Your heart is a muscular organ that acts like a pump to continuously send blood throughout your body. Your heart is at the centre of your circulatory system. This system consists of a network of blood vessels, such as arteries, veins, and capillaries. These blood vessels carry blood to and from all areas of your body. An electrical system regulates your heart and uses electrical signals to contract the heart's walls. When the walls contract, blood is pumped into your circulatory system. A system of inlet and outlet valves in your heart chambers work to ensure that blood flows in the right direction.

How to keep heart healthy Don’t smoke Exercise Don’t eat too much salt Eat more fruit and vegetables

Smoking and eating healthy Smoking is one of the biggest killers it can give you heart disease, and if you smoke for too long and you could have a heart attack. eating healthy: eating healthy involves eat fruit and vegetables.

What medical treatments are available for your heart Treatment of heart disease begins with prevention. Many forms of heart disease can be prevented or controlled effectively with prevention measures that include regular exercise, not smoking or drinking excessively, achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, and eating a heart- healthy well-balanced diet. Risk factors, such as high cholesterol, diabetes, and hypertension can be prevented or controlled through these lifestyle changes, regular medical care and/or medication.

How can your heart be replaced or operated on if it becomes damaged? node' is made up of cells in the right atrium (upper right chamber) and sends out electrical impulses or signals across the upper chambers (atria) making them squeeze or contract.

Can you donate your Heart to someone who needs a replacement? Organ donation is the gift of an organ to help someone who needs an organ transplant. An organ transplant can dramatically improve or save someone's life, but they depend entirely on the generosity of donors and their families. Fewer than 3,000 organ transplants are carried out each year in the UK. More than 9,000 people in the UK are waiting for an organ transplant that could save or dramatically improve their lives. Most are waiting for a kidney, heart, lung or liver transplant. One donor can give life to several people.

What diseases can affect your heart? Diabetes- Diabetes is one of the conditions and diseases that can directly affect your heart because of all the complications that can go hand in hand with diabetes. Anytime there is a complication with diabetes there is added stress to the heart. If you have diabetes be sure to monitor it daily and keep track of your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood glucose levels.

How can your heart be damaged / affected by your lifestyle? Atherosclerosis is a process in which fatty plaque can build up in the body's arteries, usually due to a combination of genetics, high levels of cholesterol, smoking, and other lifestyle factors. Atherosclerosis can even start in childhood, which may result in health problems in adulthood. If the plaque builds up in the coronary arteries, which supply the heart with blood, it can set the stage for a heart attack (also known as a myocardial infarction). A heart attack is a potentially life- threatening event that occurs when a blood clot forms on the surface of arterial plaque, dramatically reducing blood flow to heart tissue. The heart can be permanently damaged without emergency treatment. Heart attacks are sometimes silent, but they often cause symptoms such as chest pain, nausea, and vomiting, among other symptoms.

Even though many ambitious New Year’s resolutions seem to fizzle out by about March, keeping up a healthier lifestyle year round means a healthier heart, and a healthier heart means a longer life
