Chinese Pagodas (Chinese: 塔 ; pinyin: Tǎ)

Towerlike multistoried structure of stone, brick, or wood, usually associated with a Buddhist temple complex and enshrining sacred relics. The pagoda evolved from the Indian stupa. In China, Korea and Japan, a pagoda is a tall tower repeating a basic story unit in diminishing proportions. The stories may be circular, square, or polygonal. The pagoda form is intended mainly as a monument and has very little usable interior space.stupa From http://www.answers.com/topic/pagodahttp://www.answers.com/topic/pagoda

Longhua Pagoda en.wikipedia.org The Longhua Pagoda is the only remaining pre-modern pagoda in Shanghai city. It has an octagonal floor layout. The size of the seven stories decreases from the bottom to the top. The pagoda consists of a hollow, tube-like brick core surrounded by a wooden staircase. On the outside, it is decorated with balconies, banisters, and upturned eaves. These outer decorations have been reconstructed in keeping with the original style. Although previous pagodas existed on the same site, the current brick base and body of the pagoda was built in 977 during the Song Dynasty (960-1279), with continuous renovations of its more fragile wooden components on the exterior. Because of its age, the pagoda is fragile and is not open to the public.

The Beisi Pagoda (Chinese: 北寺塔 ; pinyin: Běisì Tǎ; Wade-Giles: Peiszu T'a) or North Temple Pagoda is a Chinese pagoda located at Bao'en Temple in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, China. The base of the pagoda has an octagonal frame, and the tower rises nine stories in a total height of 76 m (243 ft). The pagoda was once eleven stories tall, yet was damaged and reduced to nine stories. It's double eaves and flying corners are similar to that of the Liuhe Pagoda found in Hangzhou, another 12th century Chinese pagoda. Its base and outside walls are made of brick, the balustrades made of stone, and the eaves and banisters encircling the structure are made of wood. en.wikipedia.org

The Lingxiao Pagoda Zhengding, en.wikipedia.org The Lingxiao Pagoda (Lingxiao Ta), also known as the Wooden Pagoda, is a wood-and-brick construction, which was formerly part of Tianning Monastery. It was recorded to have been first built in 860 during the Tang Dynasty, it has undergone many repairs since then. The architectural style of the present-day pagoda was created during the Song Dynasty in 1045 and was left unchanged during later repairs. The pagoda has an octagonal floor plan, nine stories, and a total height of 41 meters. The four lowest stories are made from bricks decorated with wooden eaves. From the fifth storey upwards, the pagoda construction is entirely made of wood, constructed around a central pillar. While storey height continuously decreases from the bottom to the top of the pagoda, this decrease is particularly steep in the five upper wooden stories. The pagoda carries a cast iron spire at its top as well.
