DE Science Elementary “5-Minute Prep” For Plants How Plants Grow Mosses, Liverworts, and Hornworts

Mosses, Liverworts, and Hornworts – The Big Ideas Mosses, liverworts, and hornworts do not have structures for carrying water and nutrients through them. Mosses, liverworts, and hornworts live only in very damp environments such as swamps.

Mosses, Liverworts, and Hornworts – Prior Knowledge Students will have knowledge of plants prior to this study. It will help for students to use the Fun-damental, Getting to Know Plants. It will also help if they have:Getting to Know Plants Seen different kinds of plants and flowers. Planted a seed. Seen mosses.

Mosses, Liverworts, and Hornworts – Common Misconceptions Moss only grows on the north side of trees. Reality: Moss grows from spores released into the air that land on trees. These spores do not know north from south. Most often people confuse blue algae with moss, but the spores that algae grows from do not differentiate between the north or south side of trees either. It often grows away from the wind and sun which is often to the north. All plants have flowers. Reality: Conifers, ferns, and mosses are also plants. Conifers use cones to reproduce. Ferns and mosses grow spores which are released and travel on wind or water.

Mosses, Liverworts, and Hornworts – Using DE Science Content When you close this presentation, you can review the following recommended resources for Mosses, Liverworts, and Hornworts. Reading Passage: Field Log: Mosses, Liverworts, and HornwortsField Log: Mosses, Liverworts, and Hornworts eBooks: Moss:The Green Carpet PlantMoss:The Green Carpet Plant Video Segment: Rain ForestRain Forest Use the PowerPoint version of this presentation for hyperlinks to these resources or you can get to them through the browser or search feature.

Mosses, Liverworts, and Hornworts – Instructional Ideas Create a KWL chart about mosses, liverworts, and hornworts. –First ask, “What do you know about mosses, liverworts, and hornworts?” –Then ask, “What do you want to know about mosses, liverworts, and hornworts?” List responses to both questions on a wall chart. –Then read the reading passages, Field Log: Mosses, Liverworts and Hornworts and Moss: The Green Carpet Plant.Field Log: Mosses, Liverworts and Hornworts Moss: The Green Carpet Plant –Ask, “What have you learned about mosses, liverworts, and hornworts?”, and record responses on the wall chart. –Continue to add to the chart throughout the study.

Mosses, Liverworts, and Hornworts – Instructional Ideas Watch the video segment, How Plants are Useful to People. How Plants are Useful to People –Have students research other ways that plants are useful to people. –Ask them to select one plant, create a model of it and write a paragraph about how it is useful to people. –Share models and paragraphs.
