5 BARRIERS TO TRANSPORTATION Route, timetable, fare, and customer service brochures may only be available in print. Bus stop locations may not be clearly marked. Ticket vending machines that have only visible or touch screen operation controls. Safety or hazard signs and warnings that are only visibly displayed.

6 SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN AND TRANSIT SYSTEMS Introduce transit systems long before they need to do it on their own A public transportation goal can be placed on their IEP Familiarizing the student with transit vehicles Public Transportation

7 ROLE OF THE O&M SPECIALIST Teach students how to use different forms of public transportation Provide a plan for emergency situations Keep up to date regarding local transit systems and technology Aware of the unique needs of their students

8 BUS TRAVEL CHARACTERISTICS Types of bus service include local service, express service, limited-stop service and bus rapid transit Bus stops are generally designated by signs, benches, shelters or a combination Transfer points can be crowded and noisy with multiple buses arriving at the same time. Bus fare may be discounted or free, contact the local CNIB as every province is different.

11 PERSONS WITH ADDITIONAL DISABILITIES There needs to be a positive relationship between all team members when teaching specific travel skills Will require intensive instruction and repetition.
